In 1966, Ankara University opened the Faculty of Medicine in Diyarbakir, and this was the foundation of Dicle University. In 1974, the Faculty of Science was opened, making the university independent from the University of Ankara and calling it Tigris University. It is one of the oldest universities in the southeastern region of Turkey, located on the banks of the Tigris River.
